Gunnel Skölwe was born in 1948 and lives and works in Tomelilla, southern Sweden.
She paints with wax and pigment, applying thin layers upon layers to explore the play of light. The wax creates intriguing effects that complement her soft, sombre colours and her bittersweet, solitary motifs. For 20 years she worked as a musician, something reflected in the titles of her paintings, often borrowed from the jazz songbook and the terminology of music. In both music and art, she is self-taught.
